Stories

Since we're starting short stories soon, I was thinking about why I hate them. What makes a story interesting for you? Why do you love some stories and dislike others?

For me it's character development. If there's a fantastic plot and terrible characters, the story is automatically pretty dull for me. On the other hand, if the characters are great and the plot is really boring, I can still like it. With short stories there isn't a lot of room for character development, so it mostly only focuses on the main theme.

I completely agree with Steph,Short stories never seem satisfying in terms of character development and since the story is short its hard to become attached to that or any other characters in the story,But their are some exceptional short stories that are so strong or incorporate and provoke such powerful thoughts and feelings it seemingly makes up for any other story flaws.

but so many short stories leave at a loss with little to offer and less to attach I sincerely hope Mrs Clifford has some very well done ones in store for us,or I would be fearful to be in here position.

I have a strong dislike for most short stories also. Like the two before me, the lack of character development plays a large part. When I'm reading I generally get really into it, to the point where you understand the characters actions or motives. If you know nothing about the character then it's like your just seeing it happen without understanding.

Also, I like to be able to enjoy a story over time, rather than finish it in one sitting and be done with it. It's kinda like your rushing to finish it, or just to lazy to read an entire book.

What makes a story interesting for me is the characters and the way they fit into the story. Also the storyline has to start off good or I will not finish the book. I don't mind short stories. I find them more captivating then some novels i've read.

I guess i dont really like short stories.. but i dont really like what the teachers make us read..so I think thats why. Besides the story today which was really different and interesting..teachers normally make us read dumb stories that dont really make sense.

Im not really sure what makes me enjoy a book. Obviously a really good plot and characters but Ill read a lot of dirrerent stuff. I really like Twilight and ive read other vampire stories .. but then i like normal stories about peoples lives.

I think a good short story still carries character development. But what it mostly does, is it leaves substantial amounts of room for us to imagine what the characters are like, rather than be told what they are like. I also enjoy how the morals or points are conveyed so quickly. I actually quite like short stories.

What makes a good story is if it is mysterious and it makes you think abstractly. An great example is the short story that we read in class about the whale hunting. Great stories have to be skillfully plotted and give sneaky hints during the story that people have to solve. I used to hate short stories because they were really odd and dull. I agree with someone in class today who said that they had been over used in younger schooling. Great question

I think it takes skill and imagination to write short stories. If someone can fit into three pages what another can't fit into 300, I personally view that as a feat. I quite enjoy writing them and reading them, and i respect authors who have the nerve to write them.

Although character development is difficult to do, my addiction to short stories is the feeling for wanting more at the end.

I'm not a fan of short stories at all. I agree about the character development, but the story also needs a twisting and dramatic plot line for me to be interested. Short stories just don't have either.

Personally, i don't like reading long novels. I think some short stories can be very entertaining and much more enjoyable than long winded novels. Sure, short stories lack character development and all that junk, but it cuts right to the chase and gets you into the story straight away. I find that more entertaining than reading 5 or 6 chapters before anything actually happens.

Short stories can be extremely good metaphors, like we saw in "The Inheritor". I find it hard to believe that someone who really thinks about these stories doesn't see anything in them. Most people who don't like stories are the kind who read a story, then within seconds, proclaim that it is "boring" or "stupid". If your best critisism is one of these, I think it safe to say you are one of these.

I really don't mind short stories, they may not be as good as a novel, but I find them very intense. The author has to write and finish a story, with plot and characters in an average of three pages. Short stories can be long and short, but they still aren't as long as a novel which gives room for development. For short stories I find plot very important, if the events themselves are no good then how can the story be.
