I really liked the island, and found it pretty intriguing that was carnivorous. I think that it may have been put there so pie wouldn't die. He could have written the he found land instead, so there is a significance to it but I'm not to sure what it would be. At the island he was able to restore himself, and taught himself to walk again. He also got the chance to further train Richard Parker. The Meerkats may show some significance towards his return and the interview. The Meerkat bones he had left in the boat could explain the island from his first story, and make it a bit more believable. I'm not so sure of the significance of the island as a whole though.
Depending on what you see as the symbolism of the story, the island is a very crucial detail. I think that the island symbolizes Pi's struggles to maintain faith in his life, to maintain hope for a future. When coming to the island, he is tired, worn down, and ready to give up, but, after being put through trial on the island, as well as being replenished, Pi makes the wise decision to leave the island and continue his quest for real land. This is the final part in Pi's journey to finding true faith in his life - up until this point his faith was draining until he was ready to give up life, he didn't know the true religion. After leaving, however, his views on life became refreshed, and his faith much more narrow.
I think it had a sort of religious symbolism like the olive branch from Noah's Arch it was what saved Pi and R.P when all seemed loss as if their prayers had been finally answered.
