Is ignorance bliss?

We talked about this before the weekend briefly in class, and I'd like to hear your thoughts.

Do you prefer to live in a happy, carefree bubble? Rr would you prefer to be aware of the suffering around the rest of the world, a world where we actually need organizations like Amnesty International to protect human rights, where 1.1 billion people don't have access to safe water, children are forced into armies (plus, do you remember this picture? http://www.gallerym.com/images/work/big/pulitzer_nick_ut_vietnam_napalm_kim_phuc_6872_L.jpg )

Be honest.

I don't think ignorance is bliss. If we were completely unaware of things like genocide and starvation happening in places like Africa, then the people there would just fade away without anyone noticing. There wouldn't be anyone to save them from the situation there. We are blessed with many resources and riches that we can use to benefit the entire world. Some people do that, but it's only because they know what's going on. What would happen if they didn't? Our country would flourish, but the rest of the world would die.
