Pi's Supply List

I'm not really sure if this means anything, or if it's a big deal at all, but I wanted to discuss it. When Pi is listing supplies on the boat, he ends with "1 God", on p. 162. I thought this was interesting because Pi believes in three religions, one being Hinduism. Hindus believe in a number of gods, but he only lists one. What are your feelings on this, if any?

That's a good call Dakota, I for one didn't notice this discrepency. I doubt that Yann Martel was really thinking about that aspect when he wrote the supply list. If he did, maybe this is a hint that Pi has settled on a single religion to believe in.

Thats a good guess, but my guess is that every different God is each religion is actually the same God in essence, the same being. People just come up with different names and traits for their God in their religion.

This is a great question Dakota. My guess is maybe by the end he choses one religion. I have not read until the end, but that is my guess for now.

I was about to hastefully respond but read that s.todd said exactly what I was going to say.

Pi frequently mentioned he "only wants to love God".

He seems quite sure all religions worship the same spiritual power.

I also didn't notice that detail while reading that part but now that I see it pointed out you make a good point Dakota. I do agree with Crls Spncr he does mention a few times that he just wants to love god. Not a specific God as in the Christian faith, or Muslim or the many Hindu gods, but in general a connective being formed from all three( if that makes any sense). I also believe that s.todd said it well that every different god is in essense the same, just interpreted in slightly different ways. I think that also most religions are all similarily based in terms of morals and values.
