Ballads

We discussed Ballads in class today, as well as looked at a couple of examples. Can anyone name any well known ballads, whether they be songs, children's literature, etc.
What do you think is so appealing about ballads in general?

I think ballads are appealing due to the fact that they are fairly easy to read, and they tell a story of some sort. Obviously it depends on the subject, and they quality of writing of the ballad, but generally they are good to read an enjoy.

ballads are fun to read because they are more than just metaphors. but i think they would be more difficult to write. but i enjoy the stories they tell.

I think the story telling aspect, tied with the sing song of a rhyme scheme makes it fun to read/listen to. Harder to write, but people still like them.
