What is the Taleban?

This is what Wiki said:
The Taliban (Pashto: طالبان - ṭālibān, also anglicised as Taleban) are a Sunni Islamist and Pashtun nationalist movement that ruled most of Afghanistan from 1996 until 2001, when their leaders were removed from power by a cooperative military effort between the Northern Alliance and NATO countries. Committed fundamentalist insurgents, often described as "Taliban" in the media, originating in the Frontier Tribal Areas of Pakistan, are currently engaged in a protracted guerrilla war against the current government of Afghanistan, allied NATO forces participating in Operation Enduring Freedom, and the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force.

Don't know if that helps, but also not sure how to define them.

As far as I know it is the militant party that was ruling in Afghanistan before the Coalition forces entered.

On a side note, it really annoys me when people decide to anglicize words. It's Taliban, not Taleban. What's so hard about spelling it right? It's not like english a phonemic language to start with, so just keep words spelled how they're supposed to be spelled.
