Heart of a man

In the story, "Brooms for Sale" the author said that the main character had the heart of a man. We had a discussion about this in class, about why it was said and the meanings behind it.

I believe the reason men are considered to have a "stronger heart" (spirit wise) is because women are more open about there emotions. Men try to hide there emotions as the slug it out.

Your thoughts?

I believe that the reason the author choose this wording for a couple of reasons. I agree with Crls in that women are generally seen as being more open with their emotions. At this time women were also typically viewed as being dainty and lady like. So the author was probably just alluding to the fact that Greta had to overcome these things because she had to provide for herself and her son, and because she was doing the things that would have been left to her husband, she had the "heart of a man".

I don't think that the "heart of a man" comment was meant to be taken as sexist. Like tbar said, Greta had to provide for herself as well as her son. While she cared for her child like any mother would, she also took on many duties that were typically left for the husband in that time period.

Another way to look at it would be that the author didn't literally mean "man". He could have been refering to the heart of mankind in general, as opposed to something like the "heart of a wolf". If we were to look at it from this perspective, the author could have been making a comment on human nature.
