Quote.

I was flipping through one of my favourite novels today, A Clockwork Orange, and I came across this quote. I thought it'd be a good one to discuss.

"Does God want goodness or the choice of goodness? Is a man who chooses to be bad
perhaps in some way better than a man who has the good imposed upon him?"

Any comments?

First of, I'd like to quote Stephanie here... "We can't be good or evil, we're just matter..."

On a serious note here. The people in the world for whom I have the least respect are the people who have opinions (which includes almost everyone, I believe), but do nothing.

People who believe in something believe it for a reason. They think it's the right thing to do, so they act on it.

I think acting on what you believe is a feature that should always be admired.

I agree with crls spncr in the dislike of people who always criticize, but never act. I think that even if you have good imposed upon you, this is still better then being evil by choice. Even though I am not a believer myself, I'm sure that God would want good in the world, whether it be willing or imposed.

This quote sort of reminds me of the note that Mailer wrote up on the board the other day about people being late. Why do people need incentive to do what's right?

In relation to religion, should people do good things because some holy book tells them to, or should they do good things because they genuinely want to? (Obviously this subject isn't black and white, and I'm not making any judgements on anyone who's religious.)

Anyway, I agree with crls spncr about admiring people who act on what they believe.
